Stacking involves the assignment of certain individuals to
specific athletic positions based on race or ethnicity rather than ability. The
following account describes the history of stacking in the NFL. Rather than
having the opportunity to compete at the “thinking” positions of quarterback, linebacker,
and safety, black players were “stacked” at running back and wide receiver.
Fortunately, in recent years, the competition on the field for positions is
more reliant on talent than color. See David Meggyesy, Let Players Decide Who
Coaches Will Be, Sports Bus. J., Oct. 21–27, 2002. Does stacking continue to
exist in professional and amateur sports? If so, in which sports and for which
positions?
