Significant
progress has been made in recent years in understanding high-temperature
superconducting materials and their potential use as electrical conductors. Two
bismuth-based oxides are superconducting ceramic materials of choice for
various military and commercial applications, such as electrical propulsion for
ships and submarines, shallow-water and ground minesweeping systems,
transmission cable generators, and superconducting magnetic energy storage
(SMES).
