Explanations offered for the dearth of African-American head
football college coaches include interference by influential white alumni and
fans that hinders the hiring of African-American head football coaches, the refusal
of athletic administrators to admit that a problem exists in hiring procedures,
and black coaches’ lack of experience because many did not play in central
positions during college. Do you agree or disagree with any of the foregoing
reasons? Are there other reasons for the underrepresentation of racial
minorities in coaching and management positions in college and professional
sports? Professor Kenneth Shropshire argues that the inability of African
Americans to break into leadership is attributable in large part to negative
stereotypes. These stereotypes, in conjunction with the “good old boy” system
of hiring, result in lower numbers of blacks in authority positions in sports.
